1. Research the 'associated person' job openings at various U.S. National Futures Association registered foreign exchange broker-dealer businesses. Start your search at the Forexpros website, which maintains a large directory of many U.S.-based foreign exchange broker-dealers. The directory as of April 2011 lists FXCM Forex Capital Markets, Advanced Forex and ApexForex as some of the firms currently regulated by the National Futures Association.
2. Respond to the foreign exchange associated person job opening by submitting your résumé. If you are not currently licensed to work as an associated person by the National Futures Association, ask the firm to act as your sponsor for the proficiency exam.
3. Study for both the series 3 and series 34 National Futures Association exams if your chosen foreign exchange broker-dealer has decided to sponsor you by offering you a position as an associated person. Start your studies preparation by reviewing the National Futures Association series 3 and 34 exam outlines. A copy of these outlines are available online at the National Futures Association website.
4. Schedule an appointment to take both the series 3 and series 34 exams. You will want to take the series 3 exam first, followed by the series 34. Exams are administered by Thompson-Prometric (1-800-578-6273) and Pearson VUE (1-866-396-6273). Complete the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Form U-10 before taking either exam.
5. Notify your National Futures Association registered foreign exchange broker-dealer of your status. Tell him when you plan to take the series 3 and 34 exams.
