1. Look for writing on the coin. Writing is one of the most obvious identifying factors, especially if it is in a known language. Many coins will have a country name on the coin, which gives a large hint to the identity of the coin.
2. Look at the image. Images take several forms, including animals and plants. Almost any coin in the world will have an image. While an image of a person is common, such as U.S. coins with the faces of presidents, other images in the coin can give a further indication of the country of origin. Consider the style of the image.
3. Look up the image in a coin catalog or identifying guide. Websites like World Coin Catalog or World Coin Gallery have images when a catalog or guide is unavailable.
4. Match the numbers on the coin. Any coin with numbers, such as 5 or 1, has an identifying mark about the coin that determines the original value. For example, a coin with a one on it is usually the equivalent of a penny. This will help identify a coin when there are two similar coins from the same country and color is undetermined due to aging or other wear and tear.
5. Take the coin to an expert in numismatics. Numismatics experts are those that deal with the collection of coins and money from ancient times. Since they are experts in coin currency, they are able to identify a large number of coins, especially in the case of older coins. Whenever identification is not possible personally, which occurs when coins are not listed or the design is too faint to see clearly, a numismatics specialist can help.
