1. Get online. Find a mock stock trading website and register. You should only give your email address and possibly a city and state. Do not give detailed personal information unless you are opening a real trading account.
2. Never pay to open an account on a mock stock account. Legitimate mock trading websites make money through advertising -- not subscriptions or fees.
3. Start 'trading.' You are not actually trading, just practicing. Play around on the system, learn its tools and how the market works. Make mistakes, experiment and explore; this real-world simulation will allow to track stocks and learn the market, making you ready to actually begin trading.
4. Enter contests or submit your mock portfolio for review. This is another way to learn, by being judged. Compare your 'earnings' against other people's. Have an expert evaluate your picks. You may think you're doing great, but not see the real flaws in your execution.
5. Consider taking the next step. Save some money that you're willing to risk. Now that you've had practice trading stocks without risking money you'll be be able to start making real money in the real market.
