How to Host a Foreign Exchange Child

1. Consult an agency, such as the Center for Cultural Interchange, to inquire about hosting. By working with a non-profit education exchange program, you and your family can properly prepare to host a foreign exchange student.
2. Prepare a separate bed for the foreign exchange student you are hosting. You may prepare a private room for her or have her share a room like a 'sibling' with one of your children who is the same gender and preferably close in age to the exchange student.
3. Ensure the foreign exchange student is given at least three meals per day. It is your responsibility to provide proper nourishment. This is also a wonderful opportunity to introduce the foreign exchange student to American fare, as well as local specialties from your area.
4. Talk with your family about helping the foreign exchange student assimilate into the family routine. Assign the student household chores and entitle the student to privileges as you would your own children. Talk with your children about tolerating the foreign exchange student's learning curve when it comes to adapting to American culture, as well as your own family's culture. While your children can treat the student as one of the family, they must also respect the student's own culture.
5. Arrange transportation for the foreign exchange student. The student may not be permitted to drive while in the program, so it is important for you to establish a schedule for transporting the student to and from school, social functions and other activities.
