How to Figure Currency Exchange Without a Calculator

Posted by at 4:50 AM Read our previous post

1. Write the foreign amount down on paper.
2. Immediately below, write the current exchange rate. For example, one euro might equal 1.3936 dollars, as it did on 3:30pm CST on October 6, 2010. Write down '1.3936.'
3. Multply the numbers together. For instance, if a product costs 7 euros, multiply six by seven and write '42' below the numbers. Then, on the next line, immediately below the two, write '0' and multply three times seven, which yields 21. Write '21' to the left of the zero. Skip to the next line and write down two zeros on the right and then multpliy nine by seven. Continue until all the numbers have been multiplied.
4. Add all the multiplication results together column by column. Drop the decimal point in 1.3936 directly down to the same location in your added results. The resulting number is how much the product costs in dollars. Using this example, the answer is 9.7552.
