How to Exchange Money in Barcelona

Posted by at 1:34 AM Read our previous post

1. Exchange some money for Euros before you leave on your trip. Exchange rates will be more favorable at your destination. However, you don’t want to arrive in Barcelona without any usable currency in your pocket. American Express and Thomas Cook provide currency exchange services. If you need to prepay a hotel bill, you can also arrange to have a check drawn on a Spanish bank through a large U.S. commercial bank or Ruesch International (see Resources below).
2. Purchase foreign currency traveler’s checks from American Express or Thomas Cook. You can do this before your trip or at a local office. Traveler’s checks in Euros are widely accepted in Barcelona, and provide the same benefits of convenience and safety as do other traveler’s checks.
3. Try not to exchange money in Barcelona at shops, hotels or other businesses. In general you do not get as good an exchange rate and many businesses charge stiff fees to exchange currency.
4. Find a Spanish bank in Barcelona to exchange currency. Banks offer good exchange rates and low fees to exchange money. Their rates do vary, however, so it’s worthwhile to shop around (see Resources below).
5. Use your regular bank (debit) card for maximum convenience. Visa and most other debit cards are part of either the Cirrus or Plus networks, and can be used at ATMs that are also on these networks. Look on the back of our debit card to see which one applies to you. If you need help using your debit card at an ATM in Barcelona, you can call Cirrus at (800) 424-7787 or Plus at (800) 843-7587. Keep in mind that you will pay a transaction fee each time you use an ATM and you must stay within your daily limit for withdrawing money.
