1. Look to Haute Couture runway fashion shows in New York, Milan and Paris. Many fashion forecasters monitor runway shows for trend inspiration. Often, the fashions featured are too over-the-top and expensive for everyday wear, so the shows serve more as inspiration than exact replication. This is considered an example of trickle down theory -- fashion moving from high society to the common masses
2. Look to celebrities to discover new trends. Celebrities are often the fashion leaders, experimenting with new trends. Many celebrities have their own clothing lines. Review these lines for new silhouettes, fabrications and/or color palettes to determine emerging trends.
3. Look to different cultures for ideas. When many people within the same culture adopt a new clothing style, it often starts a trend. Read foreign magazines and watch foreign music videos to get trend inspiration. Europe and Japan are both on the forefront of fashion and can serve as a resource for researching foreign cultures.
4. Look at prior decades' fashion trends because what was old often becomes new again. Fashion tends do repeat themselves, so be sure to look at the fashion trends of past decades to see how they can be reinvented for today's consumers.
